They were brought to the meeting point blindfolded so that they could not see the way. Each of them had a guide to lead the way, and all Neiman could feel was the soft carpet of grass as she took an occasional step off the path and a whirlwind of scents: citrus, freshly sour bergamot, coconut, pistachios.

When they arrived at the gathering place, they were wearing jasmine and tuberose necklaces. They began to play music, slow and rhythmic at first, then it became faster and faster, spinning into a frenzy. The smell of the necklaces mingled with the smell of the tropics, and feet moved by themselves. Then, in a moment, the music stopped. Neiman stopped, opened her eyes, which she had kept closed while dancing, and saw the people around her as they were: white and black, good and evil. Now she knew who was who, and everyone knew who she was.
