The city sent out distress signals as best it could. With the lanterns of the stone streets. With neon signs of bars and pubs. With the screens of people's phones, shining their way through alleys where there had been no light for years. In one of these alleys, Epiph sold rum. He sold it to women, men, old people — anyone who wanted it. In addition to the rum, he gave women a compliment.

He knew no shame and did not censor himself in any way. Yet, his rum was as rich in flavors as his master was in sweet words.

 

The wood of the oak barrels was softened by the alcohol and warmed to the bone. The bitterness of the zest masked the bitterness of the news. The power of the whole drink stole attention from everything but this dark cellar, filled with barrels, bottles, and memories of each and every person in the stone city.
