My father, mother and three sisters, the youngest of whom was 16, were sitting on the veranda having afternoon tea. It was summer, jasmine and lilies of the valley were blooming in the yard, and the sun was shining with golden rays. There were their favourite vanilla sugar sponge cakes on the table, which had one incomprehensible ability: when the conversation was flowing well and gently, the plate of desserts seemed to fill up by itself to keep the conversation going. When everyone was in a bad mood, it appeared that no biscuits had been baked, and only crumbs and powdered sugar remained on the plate.
